This ensures that every customer experiences an enhanced experience and walks out with a new lease of life and confidence to match the HD hairline they’ve just received.
Our professional standards and top quality training all come from our head honcho and published author Craig Molyneux. Here’s his story of getting into the SMP industry after years of working as a barber.
Craig Molyneux’s SMP Story
It’s been an eventful and exciting journey for our head technician Craig Molyneux as he has become an SMP expert in the last few years. From confusion and intrigue back in 2017 when he first saw a video of a hair tattoo, right through to SMP training and making the shift away from barber work to the expert scalp micro pigmentation artist he is today. Let’s have a look at the timeline and see how it’s all worked out for Craig Molyneux within the SMP world, and now the bright, bold HD Hairlines.
At first it was purely by chance Craig Molyneux became aware of SMP and its possibilities as a future career. He had been working for some time as a barber and was confident in his abilities and skill to cut hair. Things had gone a little stale though and at the back of his mind he was starting to wonder about what steps to take next – whether to try and open his own barbershop in the future or stay where he was and where he had found great support from the team. It was when he was sat one lunchtime in 2017, scrolling through his Instagram and eating his butties (as you do) that he saw a post about SMP that changed everything.
He showed it to his boss who just replied; “it’s just a shaved head, a skin head, what you on about, why are you showing me this?”
Fooling a team of barbers that work with hair every single day was like switching a light bulb on in Craig’s head. If they couldn’t tell that the tattoo wasn’t genuine hair, then there must be a market out there for an alternative to hair transplants.
The idea was born, and Craig knew it was time to make a change.
Craig the barber
Craig had been barbering for a good few years at this point. He was good at it, he liked being part of a team, of having regular customers who trusted him to do the same hair cut every time they visited, to experiment with the bolder customers, to put people at ease whether a young lad coming in with his dad for a first ever cut through to the oldest men who have had the same short back and sides for 60 years. There’s a lot of trust between a man and his barber – and Craig gained the trust of his customers.
One of the big things that makes SMP much better than barbering for Craig is the lack of hair! He was ready for a change of scenery by the end of 2017. He was covered in hair. ALL THE TIME, and none of it was his own. He’d find hair in his car, down the back of the sofa at home, in between his toes as he took his shoes and socks off at night. The hours were really long and gruelling too, and not that fulfilling any more. It was time for a change of scenery and this light bulb moment of hair tattoos was the push he needed to move on from barbering.
It took 6 months from that first glance at SMP on Instagram to Craig getting into the business himself. He knew he had to do some research and find the best way in. There was no point in quitting the barber shop and going in cold. When he found the SMP training he knew would get him started he travelled down to Birmingham for a week of SMP training with an established UK SMP company with a good reputation.
After this week, he took his newly learned skills and begin developing his own processes, techniques, and standards. Craig wants to be the best, so he’s looked at the best SMP artists out there, learning the finest bits from everywhere to create his own gold standard of SMP.
During 2018 he continued to use the barber shop where he had worked for a few years, working as an SMP artist on the days the shop was closed. He did this for around a year, growing a small loyal base of customers and spreading his name through word of mouth and a lot of hard work.
This was a breakthrough year for Craig Molyneux and SMP. He had perfected his skills as an SMP artist in the barber shop, but he needed a studio to call his own – a dedicated, clean space that was just for hair tattoos. He finally found his dream home in the beautiful Georgian Quarter of Liverpool, on Rodney Street. There is no better place to call home, a fitting setting where customers can revitalise their lives with accurate, professional hair tattoos that change their lives.
The Values of HD Hairlines
All the work produced at HD Hairlines is based on the values Craig Molyneux holds and how he has held himself throughout his career – first as a barber and then as an SMP practitioner. When you come to HD Hairlines as a customer, you’ll experience the best levels and standards of service.
For every first time client Craig is there to welcome you. It’s daunting to come and sit with us, to ask for help with something like your hair, it impacts your entire look. We understand this, and Craig has been there and seen it all. He’ll go through the entire process with you, make you feel as comfortable as possible and make sure you’re fully committed before we start the process.
Craig Molyneux and the future of HD Hairlines
You could say Craig Molyneux fell into his career as an SMP specialist. It wasn’t something he knew about until he happened to come across it on Instagram, on a lunch break where he was mindlessly scrolling to waste some time, as we all do from time to time. Once he saw it though, he is a grafter and wanted to put in that hard work to learn the basics quickly, to set up his own studio, and to gain a reputation as one of the best in the business in the Liverpool area. Now that he’s achieved that, Craig is passing on his knowledge to others that want to train up in SMP – showing them the ropes, exposing the myths of the industry, and making sure people have access in a much easier, helpful way than he did when he first started out in SMP training.
Now, the future is very bright for Craig. After becoming the go-to SMP guy in Liverpool the next step is to expand. HD Hairlines has already opened a franchise in Cheshire and is looking to expand further in the near future, in different parts of the UK. As a brand, HD Hairlines is all about inclusivity, an open book of SMP knowledge and expertise, helping future SMP artists to become better at the skill and art of hair tattoos, and helping any person looking for a hair tattoo to cover hair loss of any kind, to boost self-confidence, and to be better versions of themselves.
